Kidney refresher with Lime and Cinnamon Barley water

“I love to make refreshing and healthful drinks. This is going to be a new favorite of mine. It’s a fantastic drink in its own right but you can drink it daily to help cleanse your kidneys. If you are on medications make sure that this won’t contraindicate first.”

I use interesting Moroccan style glasses to serve up my delicious Kidney refresher. I serve it cold straight from the fridge.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 litre of filtered water
  • 175g  pearl barley (thoroughly washed)
  • A 6cm/2.5inch *Sri Lanka/Ceylon cinnamon quill  (not Cassia)
  • A thumb of fresh garlic peeled and thinly sliced.

then…

  • The juice of half a lime
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons of the honey of your choice. I like orange blossom in this recipe

*Sri Lanka Cinnamon has lower levels of a substance called coumarin. Chinese Cassia has more coumarin that Sri Lankan Cinnamon. Too much coumarin can damage your Liver.

 Ideally drink when cold but its also delicious when warm. Best for you first thing on waking before you drink or eat anything. Have a chilled cupful to start your day.
The mix will stay fresh for upto 3 days in the fridge but I doubt it will last that long. Don’t have more than 3 cups a day.
Choose organic ingredients if you can get them.

METHOD

In large saucepan put 1 litre of filtered water, 175g washed pearl barley, a cinnamon quill, a thumb of fresh garlic peeled and thinly sliced. Bring to boil and then simmer for 25mins. No need to cover.
When the 25 mins is up, leave to cool for 10 mins. Sieve the mix into a large jug.
Add the juice of half a lime and 1 to 2 tablespoons of the honey of your choice. I like orange blossom in the recipe the best.
Chill overnight and then serve as the first drink of your day. Fabulous!
